Three Great Copy Paper Blues

Here are my three favorite blues for when I’m writing on less-than-ideal paper.

Otherwise good behaving, heavily-shading and/or sheening inks more often than not are rendered by bad paper into flat, feathering, bleedthrough-prone monstrosities.

But not these three inks. Shading is heavy on all three and bleedthrough isn’t an issue at all.

Noodler’s Bad Blue Heron: A part if Noodler’s Warden Series, their most fraud resistant inks currently produced. Feathering sent a problem and shading is heavy. There’s even a tad of the ink’s subtle sheen.

Sailor Sei-Boku: This ink is one of the only pigmented inks on the market that’s truly safe for regular use in fountain pens. On copy paper its behavior couldn’t be better. Shading and sheen are prominent. The sheen is especially striking considering the absorbency of the paper.

Rohrer & Klingner Salix: This is an iron gall ink, a category of ink that is known for its good behavior on a wide variety of paper.

You won’t regret trying any of these fantastic inks.

Iroshizuku Ku-jaku

Here’s a gorgeous ink from Iroshizuku. It’s not exactly a class act on copy paper, but on Rhodia and other quality papers it’s a stunning color.

Akkerman Laan van Nieuw Oost Indigo

This is an ink with one crazy long name, but luckily it’s good enough to justify it. There’s some serious discussion about whether or not Akkerman inks are simply re-bottled Diamine inks. I haven’t seen anything to convince be either way, but I will say that this ink is VERY similar to its supposed analog, Diamine Prussian Blue (which, coincidentally, I also love).

There are but a few fountain pen inks I’ve tried that exhibit such a well-behaved disposition on cheapo copy paper, and Sei-Boku is one of my favorites.

Not only does it go on the page without feathering and have zero issues with bleedthrough, but it also exhibits two characteristics when written with flexible nibs that are hard to come by on copy paper: heavy shading and heavy sheen.

Here’s a vibrant purple ink from Private Reserve. It’s a very “loud” color, but didn’t particularly strike me as special, though I know it has a pretty strong following.

The clear winners are Upper Ganges Blue, Baystate Blue, Bad Blue Heron, 54th Massachusetts, and Legal Lapis. It’s no coincidence that Baystate Blue and Bad Blue Heron are two of my favorite inks ever, and 54th is making its way up that list too.

This is a the only black ink in Noodler’s Warden Series of bulletproof/fraud-resistant inks designed to pe impervious (or nearly so) to the most recent development in check fraud: FRICKIN’ LASERS.

It’s a fantastic utilitarian ink. It works well in flex pens (though sometimes there are flow issues if the [flex] pen is on the dry side), but it’s no art ink. Pointed dip nibs are a no-no. It’s meant to be used to ensure security, not be pretty. It’s got a slight green tinge when spread with a q-tip, and it’s a very “black” black ink, easily the darkest and most opaque in my black ink arsenal. The drawback for its permanence? Long dry times on ink-resistant paper (such as Rhodia).

Here’s a fantastic ink with a fantastic backstory. Notice the bleached writing sample and how the tamper-resistant bright orange component serves as sort of a fraud alarm.
