Not as well behaved as Baystate Blue, not as bright as other vibrant pinks. Bleedthrough problems, bleedout problems, and holy feathering, Batman! Skip this one—there are much better bright pinks out there.

Last night I emailed J. Herbin expressing my disappointment that the original formulation of Rouge Hematite is not made anymore, and this morning I was surprised to find a response email waiting for me. I’m very happy to say that it looks like the awesome original formula is coming back!!! 😀

Here’s the text if the email:

The manufacturer is going to bring back the original red ink. I do not have
a time table yet! Thank you for writing; I am forwarding your mail to Herbin right now.

Thank you J. Herbin for listening to us! You’ve made me a very happy boy today.

I’ve emailed J. Herbin and expressed my disappointment at their removing of the golden particulates that made the original formula of the inks so unique and beautiful. I know there have always been detractors to the look, but there are more people who love it than hate it.

If you love the original formula and want your sheen back, email J. Herbin and let them know!

Here’s the response I received from J. Herbin regarding my question about their dulling down of Rouge Hematite:

Yes, we had to take the gold like die out of the formula as it had a
tendency to thicken too fast and there was a danger of clogging some
fountain pens.
I’m very sorry.

I guess I’ll be taking only tiny sips from my bottle of the original formula like people do with Parker Penman Sapphire and MB British Racing Green…

Here’s my review of Diamine Beau Blue, an ink which I’d not given a fair chance and had already made up my mind to hate. But fortunately those feelings changed when I saw that icy blue goodness being laid down on Rhodia. And also, as you might notice, I’ve made up a completely superfluous term to go along with my reviews to describe a VERY desirable (for me) trait of inks that I call…

Grotto…

Diamine Beau Blue (Medium)

And onto the new term: Grotto.

I first noticed this trait in Herbin inks. In fact, if you look at some of my previous reviews I make several references to the “‘Herbin’ look”. It’s the beautiful darker-on-the-edges look that many J. Herbin inks can achieve when they dry on quality paper, and is especially prominent in nibs that are wet, bold, or flexy. I’d never had a name for it, but when reviewing this ink I found this particular quality so striking that I felt I had to name it.

To me it is a very “wet” look, like coffee that’s dried on non-absorbent paper. But I couldn’t call it “wetness” because people would think it just never dries (and what I call a “wet” look may very well trigger something completely different when someone else see’s it). So I ran with the word “wet” without actually using it, and after some thinking I decided I shall call this ink characteristic—at least within the context of future reviews—”grotto”. Grottos are mysterious, often beautiful places that might be harboring secrets. Their walls are often wet, and the water that might come from a natural spring and form a pool in them is clear and cool, straight from nature.

So now that I’ve gotten all the poetic junk out of the way, that’s “grotto”. This ink has great grotto. Not that I expect anyone else to pick up the word (though I’ll be perfectly happy if they do); it’s just a word to describe something I’ve been trying to describe for a long time.

And here are some other inks that have great grotto.

Here’s a fantastic ink with a fantastic backstory. Notice the bleached writing sample and how the tamper-resistant bright orange component serves as sort of a fraud alarm.

Here’s an interesting ink offering from J. Herbin, though I can’t say I see myself ordering a full bottle any time soon. I’ll stick with my favorite Herbin green—Vert Réséda.
